Why Readability Outranks Raw Word Count
Word counters seem like the simplest possible tool, but the readability half is where the actual value is. Word count alone tells you length; readability tells you whether the length is doing its job. The Flesch Reading Ease score looks at average sentence length and average syllables per word, then produces a number roughly between 0 and 100, where higher means easier to read.
Most marketing copy, landing pages, and blog posts aimed at a general audience perform best in the 60 to 70 range, which corresponds to plain conversational English. Academic or technical writing naturally scores lower, and that is fine as long as the audience expects that register.
The practical use of this tool is catching sentences that have quietly gotten too long, since long sentences are the single biggest driver of a low readability score, more so than vocabulary choice.
